Gingivitis and periodontitis
Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support the tooth. Gingivitis is its first stage: the gum becomes inflamed, bleeds when you brush and, with treatment, recovers completely.
Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis: the infection gradually destroys the bone and ligament that hold the tooth. That loss cannot be recovered, which is why early diagnosis matters so much.
Who it is for
For anyone who notices bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums or loose teeth. Also for people with a family history, smokers or people with diabetes, all of which increase the risk.
And for anyone about to start orthodontics or have implants: in both cases the gums must be healthy first.
How we do it at the clinic
Our periodontists, Dr Lorena Puchades Román and Dr María Faus Damiá, carry out a full periodontal study: gum measurements, X-rays and an assessment of your risk factors.
Basic treatment consists of removing tartar and bacteria from below the gum line, with anaesthetic if needed. Advanced cases may need periodontal surgery. Afterwards, our registered hygienists take care of the regular maintenance visits, which are the key to stopping the disease coming back. Everything is explained in English.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum and can be reversed. Periodontitis gradually destroys the bone and support of the tooth, so it pays to catch it early.
Is there anyone who should not have orthodontics?
Every case needs to be studied, but generally no. Your gums must be healthy, though: if they are not, we treat them first.
Does the first visit commit me to anything?
No. At the first visit we listen, examine your mouth and explain your options, with no obligation.
How much will it cost?
It depends on your case. After the study we give you a competitive quote, in writing and by email, before we start.
